This was a holiday weekend- Labour Day- so today we have a holiday from school.
Last night the man across the street roasted a small pig and 4 chickens over a fire in front of his house, right beside the street so he could talk to everyone as they went by. I had hopes that maybe it was a ‘block party’ but no one came to invite me so I could only partake of the smells.
On Sat. evening we went to a baptism. 4 young people from the church were baptized in a river about ½ hour from here. They rented a big dump truck to take us and we had to each pay 50 pesos to help defray the cost. Everyone loaded into the back and off we went. All the way there, they sang. On the way through town we met a huge parade of supporters for the ‘white’ party. They were sitting on the roofs of cars, sitting out the windows, and some even driving their motos with a beer in their hand. There’s no experience I’ve had like driving through a traffic jam with motos darting every-which-way and everyone wanting to go where he wants to go…NOW. To experience it in the back of an open truck is even more ‘hair-raising’. I’ve been wanting to video a walk through town to see all the shops and the activity so I was able to do that on the way back. It was a great experience.
The election is May 16, yes, a Sunday, so time is getting short. Parades and loyalty flag and loud speakers driving through the streets are increasing daily. You hear stories of this one or that one getting a new moto and you see him decked out with the flag for that party. I don’t know if they are just displays of support like at home or if they really indicate that they have been bought.
