Something I've learned about and keep forgetting to comment on is the spring clean-up in Moscow. Everything gets cleaned, raked, painted, etc. I was told that the prefect, I think he's called, of each district sends out a letter requiring you to respond as to what you are doing on your property for this task. All curbs, fences, and even tree trunks get fresh coats of paint. All curbs and fences everywhere are done in alternating green and yellow. Apparently, the guy that started this was military and those were their colours. I think the factories must work all year just to have enough paint for everyone to use in the spring. The tree trunks get white paint, and the city streets get black and white curbs. The tulip beds are also starting to come alive with all their beautiful colours.
This is our second holiday in May. This will be to celebrate Victory Day on May 9. Once again we worked on Saturday in order to have Sunday till Wednesday off. The Saturday was for Monday and next Saturday we will pay back for Tuesday, and Wednesday is the actual day off. We did the same thing last week in order to have Sunday-Tuesday off for the May 1st holiday. The city decorations are beginning to appear.
For Victory Day we will go to the center to see the sights. Apparently, there is a parade on Red Square, but that is closed to the public. Then later in the day it will be open for everyone to see the decorations.
Yesterday we went to Tretyakovsky Gallery and spent about 3 hours there. Then we roamed around the area. We came upon a street that was closed off because there was a demonstration march, I guess against Putin. All the exits from the metro were closed in that area, so after trying several, we gave up and came home. That's a disadvantage of not being able to understand the announcements.
Today he was inaugurated for his next term as president, which will be for 6 years.
Clashes precede Putin's inauguration
Because of the mixed up work schedule this week, I forgot to look for the Supermoon, but we did have a thunder storm that night so I consoled myself with the probability that I wouldn't have seen it anyway. When I lamented about this on Facebook, Mr. Len posted a picture that he had taken about 4 a.m., since he was suffering from jet-lag. It's taken right over our building which is on the far left, he said. He's on the 21st floor, so it's a much better shot than anything I could have taken.
Just 2 weeks left till my trip to Thailand, and by the time I get back there will be only 3 school days left for the students, and that will put the end to May.
So for tonight, I'll say "spakoni nochi".
