Tuesday 26th- Last night I got a call from Azarias quite late saying he needed my help and since he just lives around a couple of corners, he came over. He explained to me that he had gotten a call and had to go to Santo Domingo in the morning, which is a 4.5-hour bus ride. He had tried to get a substitute teacher but couldn’t find one and he wanted to know if I would take his class, and maybe I could teach ‘a lot of English’. Since he had to go, I said I’d do what I could.
I looked through my supplies and thought about what I could do with them. There’s always drawing and colouring, etc. In the morning I was supposed to go with Judnel to see about a computer course so instead I asked him if he would help me with the class. There were only 5 students but it was good to have someone who could explain to them what I wanted them to do.
I knew I could handle their Math since I do know my numbers in Spanish. Dominoes is a national pastime here so I used dominoes and got them to count each end and then they put the ends together that matched, like dominoes. Then I took dominoes and made addition questions with them counting out the numbers from each end. I’d heard Azarias do adding so I knew how to say the words in Spanish. They had Phys Ed that day so that took up one of the periods and gave Judnel and I time to go to see about computer at Dream Project.
After recess we did the alphabet, which I had also just learned in my Spanish class. As long as you’re one step ahead of your students you’ve got it made. I took my computer with me and let them take turns typing the letters that I called out to them after we’d gone over them several times. I interspersed a couple of English activities between the Spanish courses. That was good for Judnel too. I had enough things pulled together that the morning went by with no problem. I really like this class and it was a fun experience.
Saturday 30th- Can’t believe the month is over already. Today I went to internet but could not get on. I was sooooo frustrated that I went to a computer guy that had been recommended to me. I told him about my virus and he said he could clean it up for me. I was thrilled that he spoke English and I didn’t have to try and make him understand in Spanish. I left it with him for a few hours and had a very pleasant walk to the mountain and then went back and got it. He says it is fixed and seems to be so. I will know after the next time I go to internet. He installed a free anti-virus for me and I told him I am going to get a new browser the next time I’m online. All that for only 800 pesos ($26.66). Hopefully that will remedy this terrible ordeal. Mostly it was a nuisance, but it did stop me from downloading anything.
The walk to the mountain was fabulous. It’s the one in back of our community, for which we are named CallejÏŒn de la Loma. Judnel showed me a place where he goes to sing and pray. Someone has built steps up the side from rock and cement. At the top the view is spectacular. You can see all the way to the beach. It feels like you’re on top of the world. We talked about the Scripture of Satan taking Jesus to the top of a high mountain (Matt. 4:8-10) On the way back we saw a peacock and several of his harem. It’s been a great day!

Instant in season out of season. Always ready to do what is required...the life of a missionary (but it should be how every Christian lives). Kudos on a job well-done!
ReplyDeleteTori just finished her read-a-thon on Sunday night. She read 26 books in January - 4,222 pages. She told me she was going to take a break from reading, but last night when we arrived home she said, "I can't do it! I just can't do it!" I had no idea what she was taking about. Then she continued, "I have to start another book!" Too funny.
I'm hoping our adoption agency books our tickets today. We'll either be traveling to China on March 11 or March 12. It is confirmed that we will meet Violet on March 15. :D

So glad you were able to get the computer fixed and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. I'll catch you on here sometime soon I hope. If I had any idea why my mic doesn't work on skype and msn I'd get it fixed up. It just doesn't make sense, every time I put skype on it kills the mic...oh well....
